3 Tips to Get Moving this Fall and Winter.

By Dr. Ashley Damm, ND11/9/2022

Exercise is important, we know this. But with the weather getting darker, colder, and rainier - motivation to be moving can be limited. And yet, exercise is one of the most important things to help our mental health, immune system, and overall wellness during this time of year.

Here are my 3 tips to help you get moving this fall and winter.

1. Build it into your schedule.

The one mistake I find is planning exercise after you’ve come home and put your feet up. It’s the hardest thing to motivate yourself after a long day and you finally get to flop on your couch. Instead, find a way to build it into your schedule - pair it with another activity.

I like to ride my bike to work. This has been a game-changer for me. I bought a cheap pair of rubber pants and a rain jacket and I’m good to go. And it forces me to get moving at the start and end of my day. This helps me have a clear mind when I start and feel grounded when I come home.

Other ideas include:

  • Putting your gym bag into your car and heading straight to your gym after work.
  • Always pairing a walk after your meals - after lunch and after dinner (bring your family or dog along!).
  • Consider a walking standing desk - to encourage movement throughout your workday.

If you tie your movement to something that is already a routine, it becomes easier to follow.

2. Be flexible with the type of exercise.

You may find yourself super active in the summer - when you’re out and it’s warm out. And then come winter, you’re much more stagnant and sedentary. Be flexible in the type of exercise. Remember, any type of movement is good. If you’re in a line of work that requires a lot of sitting - we need to get you up and moving regularly.

This may mean a stationary bike indoors that you hop on. Tuning into a yoga/stretch class online at the end of the night. Joining a class that motivates you to show up. Or grabbing an office buddy and holding each other accountable.

Fun fact: me and my office buddy are doing daily squats, increasing by 1 each day. Our goal is to do this every day until we hit January. We’re up to 22 now!

3. Consider a sauna.

I love the sauna in the fall and winter. While it may not be traditional exercise - there are many benefits of sauna for mental health, our immune system, and getting our blood flow and sweat pouring. Many community centers have them and they are excellent this time of year. If you’re unsure if this is a good option for you, speak with your ND or healthcare provider.

If you’re struggling to get moving this fall/winter - know you're not alone. Likely this means that someone else in your community is probably feeling that way - reach out and support one another!
